Dying Farrakhan still has time to hate…

Nation of Islam hatemonger Louis Farrakhan is dying, but he still had at least one more speech left in him, which he delivered in February 2007 in Detroit.  It was delivered at the annual convention commemorating the birth of Nation of Islam founder Wallace Fard.  Farrakhan certainly has toned down his anti-Semitic rhetoric, even including Jews among the people of faith in the world.  Yet ADL’s Foxman condemned Farrakhan (see below) for recommending his followers read books that spread conspiracy theories about Jewish control over banking, the African slave trade and other evil.

There were also other ominous elements of his self-aggrandizing, sometimes incoherent speech.  The most disturbing one was that he kept warning the United States of its imminent destruction because of its practices.  I see this as a veiled “fatwa”.  That is, he is inciting Muslims to attack the United States in order, and I paraphrase, to destroy this tyranny in order to bring true peace into the world.  He made this not-so-veiled “warning” several times in the speech.  Looked at in conjunction with the excellent article in this week’s NYTimes Magazine about Sam Nunn and the Nuclear Threat Initiative, it is ominous.  That article talks about the privately funded (by Warren Buffett and Ted Turner) effort led by former Democratic Senator Sam Nunn to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons.  These three are true heroes.  With all that is going on in the world today, it is easy to get distracted. To have the presence of mind and commitment to focus on probably the key risk of our times, namely, the proliferation of WMD, especially to terrorist groups, is nothing short of being a modern-day Winston Churchill.

ADL condemns Farrakhan for touting ‘notoriously anti-Semitic’ books

The Anti-Defamation League Tuesday condemned Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan for a speech in which the ADL said Farrakhan recommended “several notoriously anti-Semitic books.”“Farrakhan may have held his anti-Semitic views in check while on the dais, but if this is what he wants people to read, then the leopard hasn’t changed his spots,” said ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman in a statement released by the organization.

“Minister Farrakhan’s reading list includes books that purport to expose ‘the truth’ about Jews and their control of the federal banking system or their role in the African slave trade.

According to the group, during an address at Ford Field in Detroit, Farrakhan recommended the following books:

  • The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews. The ADL said the book “argues that the history of slavery in the New World was dominated by Jewish ship owners and merchants. The book presents a multi-layered attack against the Jewish people, assaulting the integrity of the Jewish religion, the meaning of Jewish history, and the foundations of Jewish scholarship upon which the book?s own fraudulent charges are based.”
  • The Secrets of the Federal Reserve, by Eustace MullinsAccording to the ADL, Mullins is an “anti-Jewish conspiracy theory propagandist,” and the book “one of the key conspiracy books claiming that the banking system in the U.S. is controlled by a few elite families (most of them Jewish). It is a key text used by anti-Semites on the far right.”
  • The Synagogue of Satan, by Nation of Islam member Ashahed MuhammadThe ADL said the book “claims that the world is being manipulated and corrupted by Satanic powers led by Jewish elites.”
